The old man doubled over, coughing. The candles flickered. The scent of incense grew. Niall touched his back, torn between compassion and agitation. “The passage,” he said to Hugh. “You must check it. ’Tis possible he crossed and went down it.”

“How would he know of it?” the Laird demanded.

“We’ve no idea who he is!” Niall nearly shouted. He bit back his agitation, bowing his head. “My apologies, my Lord. We know not who he is. We must at least look.”
