Prelude 8, The Battle is O'er
The Battle is O'er
Book Five of The Blue Bells Chronicles
Prelude...7
Glenmirril,
Present
His crying settles to
hiccups, that still manage to echo in the empty medieval chapel. He
buries his face in my shoulder, and becomes still.
“What just happened
here?” Mairi’s voice shakes. “Where did they go?”
I take her hand in my
free one, squeezing. “I’m not sure,” I say.
Shawn emerges from
behind the crucifix, his face grim. He looks every inch the medieval
warrior, in his trews
and leine, his
red-gold hair tied with a leather thong. “Wait here,” he barks.
In his sharp command, I
hear a man who has become a leader, who has ridden with James Douglas
and fought at the Bruce’s side. He draws knives from his boots, one
in each hand. “Mairi, take James,” he barks. “There’s a
passage. I’m going in. One of the tunnels leads to the water gate.
He could circle back.”
