Shawn explodes into the room, shouting, “Amy!” He’s scooping me up off the flagstones, and immediately pushing me away, reaching to his back for a claymore that isn’t there. “Stay there!” he orders. He storms to the crucifix, to the wall behind it.

I gather James in my arms, burying my face in his thick, black hair, breathing thanks to Niall, to Eamonn, wherever, whenever, they are; to God. James is safe. Nothing else matters. Not Shawn, not Angus, not Niall or Eamonn. James is safe.
