“Shawn was telling the truth,” she breathes.

“Yes.” I speak more shortly than I intend. “Simon is—was—a knight in King Edward’s service. He might come back,” I say. “He’s from Niall’s time. If he comes back, you have to get James out.”

“I’m not leaving you,” she protests. James whimpers.

“You’re getting him out!” My voice is firmer by far than the knife wavering in my hand.

Motion behind the crucifix! My heart kicks into tempo. I jump forward, shouting, “Get him out!”
