Niall heard the voice distinctly, a woman's harried, breathless voice in something akin to Shawn's peculiar English.  A baby squealed.  Hugh's eyes grew wide, looking at Niall.  "What's this, Niall?"

"The crucifix..." Niall began.  But he wasn't in the tower!  He rose to his feet.  Amy stood before him, staring in horror at the statue of Mary.  Niall turned cautiously.  "There," he whispered to the Laird.  Before the statue, a man, built like a knight of Edward's army, faced an elderly monk with a few thin wisps of hair clinging to his nearly bald pate.
