James lets out a questioning squeal. “Ma...” he says.

Who were they?” Mairi asks again.

Niall.” I wish my hand would quit shaking. I try to think what I’ll do if Simon appears.
They were wearing medieval clothes.”

I nod, watching the crucifix. Who am I fooling? I can’t protect my son. I can’t protect him! My hand shakes harder. I grip my right wrist with my left hand, trying to steady it. “That was Niall. And the Laird.”

Tonight I am Niall Campbell,” Mairi whispers. “Born in Glenmirril on the shore of Loch Ness.”

Yes,” I whisper.

In 1298.”

1296,” I correct. Like it matters, I think irritably.
Shawn was telling the truth,” she breathes.

And now, I am excited to announce....drum roll....

The Feet Say Run, written by my friend and fellow Gabriel's Horn author, Dan Blum, has been optioned by a Hollywood producer!

I have loved this book from the time I first read it. It's the fascinating story--poignant, profound and told with humor--of 85 year old Hans, caught on a desert island, the last one not known to GPS. Throughout the story, we see the foibles, comedy, and tragedy of seven very different people caught on an island, and the things they still worry about even in this desperate situation, even as we learn the tragic story of Hans's own past, coming of age in Hitler's Germany, the decisions he made while still a boy, under pressure from many sources, and the lifelong impacts, both of the war and his own youthful decisions.

This has been one of the books I never forget, with people who are so real I can't call them 'characters,' and vivid settings and scenes that remain three years after I first read the book. I am thrilled to have had some small part in this great story being a step closer to coming to life on the silver screen!

From my earlier post on it:

The Feet Say Run
is the story of a life spent running--a literary novel that is also a suspenseful page-turner, a work at once emotionally gripping and darkly comic.

In his waning years, Hans Jaeger finds himself stranded on a desert island--the last island not mapped by modern GPS--with a small band of survivors.  What is my particular crime, he asks.  Why have I been chosen for this fate.
And so he begins the chronicle of his long life.  He tells the tale of his life in Nazi Gemany, the Jewish girl he loved, and his years fighting with the Wehrmacht.  His war experiences are vividly individual--a struggle for survival in the most harrowing of circumstances--and yet also the broader story of the cruelty and absurdity of the Nazi regime, the madness of men, and of war itself.  Hans's story is the story of all the madness, irony, and horror of the modern world--and the story of one man who finds redemption when there's nowhere left to run.

If you haven't already, I strongly urge you to read The Feet Say Run!
