Somewhere, he felt a cool draft. He smiled. If he but followed it, he would find his way out. He drew his knife, prepared for whatever—whoever—he might find.

Glenmirril, December 1317

“How do you know me?” Niall asked.

“The other one!” Hugh looked wildly around the chapel. “Who was he?”

The old monk, his hand pressed to his breast, wheezed, “Shawn will take care of him.”

“You were with Amy.” Niall pulled the monk to his feet more forcefully than he’d intended. Shame washed over him thinking of an elderly priest, far away in England. “My apologies, Brother. Forgive me.” He ushered him to a pew and helped him sit down.

“Who was he?” the Laird demanded. “Who is he?” He turned to Niall. “Is he here or there? Was that Amy?”

“Aye,” Niall said tightly. “’Twas Amy.”

“He’s from Shawn’s time, then? But if this monk crossed, did he, too?”

“Did he?” Niall asked the monk. “Who is he?”
